I’ve covered alot of theory and explanations in my previous posts. For this post I want to focus on providing some language, lingo, sentence examples to better your IT vocabulary.
- Being new to the IT industry
- “I’ve graduated from XYZ university/tafe. I’m pretty green on all these flows. Are you able to give me a high level explanation on how these systems work. Who do I need to talk to if something breaks?”
- “Can you tell me the who’s who in our IT department? Who’s the product/service expert, product/service owner. What do these people look after?”
- “I’ve done some research on this system. I got a general idea how this system works. However can you tell me the top 5 issues with this system? What are some weaknesses or common questions we get asked on this?”
- Being introduced to a new system/service
- “I’m pretty green to this new system/service. Do you have someone I can sit down with that can explain the basics of this service end to end. Is there a existing service that performs a similar function; can you this to me?”
- “I have some previous experience on ‘X’ system. However I’ve only I’m only familiar with these specifics functions. Talk me through how this function works, what it does, how it performs etc. Is there any external systems, vendors, endpoints that I need to be aware of?”
- “This whole system flow is new to me. Got no idea how this works. I’m going to need someone to show me end to end how this new system works. Can we perhaps cover the login, UX interfaces, and the top 3 flows of this new system and along the way if I identify some new or other functions of interest we can review another day”
- “What are the top 3 functions and what are the top 3 weaknesses or bugs of this system?”
- Asking people type questions
- “What’s the boss/manager like during the day? Can you provide me their strengths and weaknesses?”
- “Who do I need to be wary of in terms of their personality? Are their any individuals that I need to approach a certain way etc”
- “Who knows the product / service well so if I have questions to ask I can reach out to them?”
Summary
- The examples above are a guide on how to ask some questions in the IT workforce
- I personally have used alot of the examples above in many situations
- Don’t be afraid to ask the tricky questions in particular people questions
- Remember to build this up. You can’t be expected to know everyone and their personalities on the first day, first week, first year.
