These posts we’re created to assist new comers into the IT job market
You’ve just graduated from uni/college/school and you want to start working in the IT field. Most IT professionals and others usually ask, ‘why’. “Why do you want to do this field, why do you want to do this field” etc. This post is not to ask or address ‘why’, but ‘what’ and ‘how’ (and ‘where’). What are How are more important than why (imo).
- What have you done until now to get you to a certain level of knowing IT
- And to a certain degrees, ‘where’. Where do you want to go on this journey.
- Do you have some idea or basics in the field you wish to pursue?
- How do you intend to fulfil your what (and where)
- What did you want to learn in IT?
- Systems
- Programming
- Networking
- Operations
- Tech admin
- Incident management
- Problem management
- ITIL
- How do you intend to learn these fields if you have next to know knowledge?
- Maybe watching some YouTube videos and searching terms like
- “How to route a corporation / enterprise network “
- “How to support online applications”
- “What are the top issues in IT – development”
- As a suggestion, search for “day in the life of <IT worker field profession here>”
- There will be a lot of curated videos (Unfortunately this is modern social media :/ )
- As a suggestion these are the things I look out for when learning IT
- “What was on the screen the IT was looking at”
- Can I search online what these screens are?
- “What is that building” i.e. the computer/laptops, meeting rooms
- (picture yourself working in this setting)
- “What are these job titles that appear on the screen”
- “What was on the screen the IT was looking at”
- Or you might even go onto Google or your choice of search engine to perform the same searches and actually read content
- Yes reading, long form 🙂
- Maybe watching some YouTube videos and searching terms like
- What did you want to learn in IT?
Summary:
- Your why is what you want, the what and how, is the journey
- What and how will your journey look like
- You might not know straight away, there will be gaps and uncertainties, but there’s a plethora of information online to at least show you what’s past the front door to start your what and how
- What and how will your journey look like
