Reflection post – How to deal with different personalities

Note – this is an opinion piece only. This is not a post suggesting professional or personal advice in the workforce. Sources mentioned are of my personal and professional use, it is advised that if you try these sources, to see if you resonate, before embarking on whether following these sources for further career development.

I previously posted this article https://infotechmentor.com/2025/02/22/how-i-deal-with-different-personalities/ about how you will encounter people, staff, users with different personalities.

  • Let’s face it, you’ll come across different types of people in the IT workforce (or your industry specific workforce)
    • Some great, some in-between and others on the other side of the spectrum
    • That’s the reality
  • There’s always a better way to dealing with personalities
  • I listen often to podcasts suggesting on how to deal with different people
    • Jefferson Fisher and Mel Robbins, are two authors whom I listen to, to gain knowledge and expertise on dealing with people
    • These are individuals with experience in their respective fields
  • Find other people that work in your field, see if they have material offering how they deal with different people
    • Each field / sector of the workforce will be different. Sure we’re all abstained to pressure and timelines, but each field will have a unique set of challenges
    • E.g. In tech, my pressure will be on keeping systems running 24/7, where as someone in law might be under pressure to get their case right, with the right documentation and sources
  • After identifying the sources / people you are following for people advice, write down some of the comments they’ve made that you like and don’t like
    • Not all advice that comes from professionals will be comfortable or don’t resonate with you’re people goals
      • Again this is ok.
    • You can’t pigeon hole all your people skills into one basket, some advice you’ll relate to and other skills you’ll need to work on or even dismiss altogether
      • E.g. As a person that enjoys efficiencies, I’ve had to learn with other people to deal with little efficiencies. People with the attitude of “I’ll deal with it later”. In my position I’ve had to accept this trait and find another way to achieve what I want with this person.
  • Reflect on what you’ve written. Believe that you want to improve with people
    • I believe that once you master people (comfortably), you master your career

Summary:

  • This is a post merely summarising what you’ll encounter in the workplace
  • No matter the place, school, university, tech workforce, support team, front or back office. You will always encounter a personality that you like and dislike.
    • That is normal to feel, after all we’re human beings with different upbringings
